Ardal grew up in his place of birth, Misthall, one of the holdings of the principality of Adraoweth. He was the son of the local hunters and was taught the family trade as he grew up. When he but a teen he became a man by completing the requisite tasks of his role, which culminated in the tracking and slaying of a great bear. Ardal was subsequently granted a home of his own in Misthall, and was allowed to participate in the courtship rituals in a year of his choice. He waited a year, to ensure the pool was closer in age to him, and then put forth his name. The conclusion of the rituals saw him and Cilith, a girl a year his senior who had just completed the farming tasks, joined. The two lived together for two years before the calling came for Ardal.
The principality was surrounded by many foes, and had been gradually losing land in constant wars with its neighbors . Faced with an increasingly dire situation, several years prior Prince Cadiran and the high order of seeresses determined that each summer celebration various skilled sons and daughters of Adraoweth should be magically sent to distant realms to obtain assistance or resources for the war efforts through whatever means necessary. Few returned from such missions, but great heroes of Adraoweth such as Lylath of Pinebarrow and Colm the Blessed had managed to return with valuable aid, so the missions continued. The selection method used by the seeresses was a mystery to the common folk and the year's selectees often included elderly and young, and those of high and low blood alike. Ardal was one of the younger individuals selected in his year, making the journey to the transportation ritual a few moons after the 18th celebration of his coming to be. Ardal stepped into his portal when his name was called and awoke to find himself in strange new lands he had never heard of before.
