Magic in the Fabled Lands is a fluid thing, subject to the will and imagination of each individual spell caster, yet there are rules and limitations. Magic is not endless nor are the possibilities infinite. Additionally, certain schools of magic are strictly regulated by the sorcerers' colleges of Dweomer, for the safety and security of all the denizens of the Fabled Lands, and to safeguard their own interests as well. Healing magic is subject to strict regulation. After all, it gives power over life and death. Few are accepted to study at the College of Healing and the exams are notoriously difficult. The mysterious arts of Necromancy and Blood Magic are illegal in Dweomer and much of the Fabled Lands at large yet its whispered that a few practitioners of these dark arts yet exist. Creatures such as goblins, trau and elves all have their own kind of magic that is not subject to human rules and laws.
The most common type of magic is elemental, in which mages bend the natural world to their will. Elemental magic has four major branches - Earth, Fire, Air and Water. Each of these branches has its own lesser branches, as most mages find they have an affinity for a specific kind of magic.
Elemental magic can be many things - offensive, defensive, practical and flashy. A mage may destroy an enemy through offensive magic tied to their and protect themselves by harness the elements to provide a magical shield. Here I'll talk a little about the different kinds of elemental magic.
Fire Magic
Fire magic is beloved of warrior mages and entertainers. Is easy to forget that the ability to harness the deadly power and beauty of fire begins with learning two of the simplest spells of all - creating light (without heat), and starting a fire. As well as these pedestrian tasks, without which many a mage would meet a sticky end, fire magic is most commonly used for offensive spells. Fire bolts and fireballs are among the most popular spells but a skilled mage can cast more elaborate offensive spells if he so wishes. Mages may also use fire for defensive purposes, such as keeping away intruders by creating a magical force field of fire.
Water Magic
Water magic is commonly used for both offensive and defensive spells. The most talented mages of all can even walk on water for short periods, though none has ever dared brave the Violet Ocean afoot. Cold magic, a lesser branch of Water magic, is a favourite with warrior mages, who enjoy using ice bolts and trapping their enemies in a blizzard until they freeze to death. Other offensive spells include the use of poison sprays and acid bursts. Water Magic can also be used to combat fire magic, and lightning bolts. Additionally, while Cold magic is the most popular sub branch of Water magic, it's equally possible for a mage skilled in both Water and Fire magic to cast offensive spells using boiling water instead.
Air Magic
Like all elemental spells, Air Magic can be offensive. Lightning magic is especially popular because it's both dangerous and flashy. Lightning bolts and lightning storms have struck fear into the hearts of many. Some mages can even steal an enemy's breath from his lungs. A common defensive use of Air Magic is the creation of a magical force field, either around one's body, or a larger area such as a campsite or house, in order to protect it. It's rumoured that some especially talented Air mages have made strides in harnessing the power of flight.
Earth Magic
Earth Magic involves using the natural world for spell casting. The most popular of the lesser branches is the use of Nature magic, which is particularly favoured by druids. Nature magic allows the caster to command plants such as vines and trees in combat. Some Nature mages can even control animals in combat. The smaller the animal is, the more likely the mage will be able to control the creature's mind. Insects are much easier to control than mammals, which makes the Deadly Swarm spell especially popular. Regarding other types of Earth Magic, Stone Fist and Earthquake are popular combat spells.

Mind Magic
Mind magic involves tampering with the minds of others. As such, it can be a dangerous branch of magic when used to harm others. Mind magic is not commonly used in combat due to the difficulty of the training and restrictions placed upon its practitioners. However, the Mind Blast blast spell is particularly effective against weak-minded individuals. Mind Magic can also be used to frighten or calm people. A popular branch of Mind magic is Illusion. These spells change a person's perception of an object or being. Often that will be simply a case of changing the appearance, but sometimes it will be the size, sound, smell etc. Performers typically use Illusion spells to make themselves seem more impressive.
Spirit Magic
Spirit Magic involves the manipulation of the life force, that priests call the spirit or the soul. This branch of magic is particularly popular with priests and paladins. Spirit Arrows are powerful bolts of the caster's essence, used to harm the enemy. Spell casters can also use the ever-popular Drain Life spell to suck an enemy's life force from him in combat. Spirit magic is often particularly effective against the undead. Necromancy is a branch of Spirit Magic.
Body Magic
The most popular branch of Body Magic is Healing, which focuses on ways to protect the body from harm as well as heal existing injuries. While Healing Magic is notoriously difficult and subject to much regulation, its counterpart, Entropy, is used to harm enemies in combat. Popular combat spells include Flying Fist and Death Cloud. Blood Magic is a branch of Body Magic.
